Drop-In Services

Some CAPS services require an appointment or sign-up, and others are "drop in," meaning you can just show up without having to schedule in advance. This page describes the drop-in services we offer. Click on the various links or call us during business hours at (831) 459-2628 to learn more!

  • Groups: Some of our groups are drop-in groups you can attend any week without scheduling ahead or committing to coming every time. (Note that others require sign-up; see the schedule on our "groups" page for details.)
  • Let's Talk Service: Stop by various locations on campus for a one-time talk with a professional counselor to get information, support, or a counselor's perspective. (See web page for schedule/locations.)
  • Relaxation Station: CAPS has a deluxe massage chair with relaxation resources that is available on a first-come, first-served basis in a screened-off area in our waiting room. Any student, even those not using CAPS' other services, can use it.
  • SHIP Referrals: CAPS staff can create or update a SHIP referral form for students with UC SHIP insurance who are seeing or need to see an off-campus therapist or psychiatrist; we can usually provide this form without an appointment. Call or stop by our office during business hours and ask our front desk staff if your referral request can be handled same day. At times, we can also give you the names of off-campus clincians on a drop-in basis, but depending on the complexity of your request and staff availability, you may need to make an appointment with a CAPS counselor to get help with this process.
  • Special Events: CAPS often offers special outreach events, such as a vigil around suicide awareness and remembrance, a mood screening day, and a film night with panel discussion; we advertise these drop-in events on our Facebook page.
  • Workshops: CAPS staff and trained Peer Educators provide drop-in workshops each quarter on a variety of topics.

Note that CAPS does not provide drop-in counseling/therapy. In crisis situations, we do provide same-day crisis screenings (to ensure a student's safety and make a plan for treatment or resources), and we also provide same-day crisis consultations in person or by phone with staff, faculty, students, or others with concerns about a UCSC student who may be in crisis.
