Support is provided by licensed clinicians at Cowell Student Health Center and other campus locations.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) understands that social pressures and intersecting identities affect individuals in unique ways. Our diverse team is trained in multicultural counseling and equipped to support LGBTQIA+ students, survivors of sexual violence, and students with disabilities.
We provide care for a variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship challenges. Committed to high-quality service, CAPS staff participate in ongoing professional development—both required and voluntary—to stay current with best practices in mental health care.

Richard’s clinical interests include alcohol and other drug use, religion and spirituality, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. He has experience with a wide range of populations and settings, including ethnically diverse populations, adult populations (ages 18-61), LGBTQ-identified clients, residential substance treatment, community mental health, and college counseling. Richard believes in working collaboratively with students, helping them identify their personal goals and supporting them in their journey.

Jenner takes a client-centered approach to working with students. Jenner has experience working as a therapist and case manager in a residential treatment facility for adolescents in the foster care system, and at a drug and alcohol treatment facility. Jenner has training in cognitive-behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness. She feels that it is important to connect students to organizations and resources on and off campus to help student’s sense of community.

Amelia has particular interest and expertise working with former foster youth, undocumented students, first-generation students, transfer students, and the veteran student population. Amelia also has particular interest in working with substance use, harm reduction and recovery, Latinx students, trauma, interpersonal conflicts, grief/loss, and supporting community-building. Amelia is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Susan is particularly interested in cultural, identity, eating, grief and loss, parenting, life transition, and sexual orientation issues while sustaining a professional passion about community mental health, social justice, and the interface between psychology and religion. Her therapeutic approach is integrative with an emphasis on interpersonal, imaginal, existential, feminist, and psychodynamic perspectives. Susan also draws on alternative treatment modalities to talk therapy such as expressive arts, mindfulness, and somatic practices.

Julia is a generalist clinician who enjoys working with all students with anything they are experiencing or questions they may have about themselves. She offers additional experience and expertise in incorporating cultural relational/identity exploration and social justice values as part of treatment, as well as narrative and mindfulness practices.
Populations and clinical areas of interest/experience/expertise include sexual identity development, gender identity development, African/Black/Caribbean (ABC)-identified students, major/chronic health issues, students who struggle with attentional difficulties/ADHD, and graduate students.

James also is interested in using a multicultural and social justice approach to therapy and is interested in working with the LGBTQ+ population as well as other populations who have been marginalized and discriminated by society. James recognizes the many complex difficulties one can experience in a graduate program and is interested in working with graduate students and giving them a space to process the many obstacles that one can experience. James is interested in working with individuals experiencing anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and providing trauma-informed care to those who have experienced trauma and complex trauma.

I have 7 years of clinical training and practice working in a variety of mental health settings with a wide range of diverse populations and presentations. I started my clinical training working with junior/high school students and families then moved onto working at a community counseling center with all age ranges, identities, and presentaitons. I then shifted my focus to forensic psychology and spent one year at Canyon Ridge inpatient mental hospital and one year at Loma Linda hospital’s personality assessment and substacne use disorder unit. After these two difficult years, I shifted my focus back to working with students and young adults and trained at University of La Verne for one year and then University of Redlands for the next year before coming to UCSC for my doctoral internhip and postdoctoral fellowship.
