Types of therapy at Counseling and Psychological Services
CAPS offers a variety of therapy options to support students with different needs, whether you’re seeking short-term help or long-term care. Below are the types of therapy available:
Brief individual counseling
Brief, intermittent therapy for students addressing specific concerns such as stress, anxiety, mild depression, identity and relationship issues, skill development, and life transitions. Typically, students attend 1 to 4 sessions per academic year. It is a collaborative process that requires active participation to create meaningful change.
Single-Session therapy (SST)
A goal-oriented, stand-alone session focusing on a specific issue. SST helps students gain strategies and perspectives to address a particular concern. The aim is for the client to leave with a better understanding and the confidence to move forward.
Group counseling
CAPS offers various counseling and support groups that can help students feel less isolated and gain feedback from peers. Examples of groups include support for grief, emotional regulation, trauma, and identity-based groups. Both sign-up groups (with weekly attendance) and drop-in groups (no sign-up required) are available.
Long-term or open-ended therapy
For students dealing with complex or long-term mental health issues, this therapy option offers more extended support. You can request long-term therapy or it may be recommended by your IA therapist. We assist with referrals to off-campus providers and help navigate the process with insurance coverage.
Couples and family counseling
Couples and family counseling is available to UCSC undergraduate and graduate students on a limited basis, depending on counselor availability. At least one member of the couple or family must be a registered UCSC student.
