AA/PIRC & CAPS Community Space on 1/25

Message from Caz Salamanca, Director, Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC)

January 24, 2023

Dear UC Santa Cruz Community,

On behalf of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), we want to express our sadness in response to recent violent events that have impacted our communities.

Early this week, tragedy struck communities both in California (Monterey Park & Half Moon Bay), and in Indiana. What should have been a joyous time of new beginnings with the Lunar New Year, is now burdened with tragedy. Regardless of the motivation behind these violent acts, our communities are left with loss, sadness, fear, and anger.

We recognize that our campus community is also impacted by these events, as we may see ourselves or our loved ones reflected in the victims, or the locations may be home to some in our campus community.

AA/PIRC is partnering with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to host a Community Space for those who feel compelled to be in community, or would like to connect with a CAPS Counselor during this difficult time. On Wednesday, January 25, from 5-7 PM, the Ethnic Resource Centers Lounge (3rd Floor of the Bay Tree Building) will be open for members of the campus community to drop-in, share space, and a meal (provided).
